Your mom is only regurgitating what she's been raised with. If anyone does even a little bit of research, they'll find that's just not true. It's perfectly healthy as long as you're not picky and provide yourself with enough nutrition. Other sources of protein you might find helpful are from fungi (mushrooms, nutritional yeast, and quorn-based stuff) and alternative grains, like quinoa, that are higher in protein than, say, rice.
